Joining the slew of exclusive kaiju, sofubi and keshi that’ll be up for grabs at the Rampage Toys x Disarticulators ToyCon UK booth next Saturday, our very own Tru:Tek is proud to reveal the resurrection of one of the craziest ever resin figures in keshi form… the mighty Tanklopula! The brainchild of Triclops, Jesse Destasio and The Tarantulas, the Rampage sculpted mini figure features signature elements from all 3 artists, including tentacles, a Nibbler chest piece and Tankhead turret- all coming fitted with fully interchangeable, 100% Glyos compatible joints. Originally making a very limited appearance back in 2011, the latest (and most likely final) run has been produced in a urethane rubber courtesy of Tru:Tek, with the batch of 15 each coming in a special one-off colorway inspired by a wide variety of 80s and 90s pop culture. Touching down exclusively at the Rampage/DA booth (#16) come opening time at 9am, Tanklopula has been priced at £35 a piece. Stay tuned for details of online sales, plus AP releases from both Destasio and Triclops soon!
Originally teased here a couple of weeks back, The Tarantulas have just revealed their Nibbler x Rampage Toys line-up in full! Featuring a total of 5 custom Nibblers mashed up with a number of different Rampage sofubi, including the Gachapon Goblins, Cyclops Dinos and of course, the Ugly Unicorn, the quintet have been decked out in a choice selection of vintage inspired sprays and hand painted detailing. Due to be touching down exclusively at The Tarantulas’ ToyCon UK booth next month (4/12), pricing on the figures has been estimated at around £50 each… But that’s not all! Judging by Rampage Toys’ recent IG activity, it would appear that they will also be serving up a fresh batch of Nibbler customs at the event too! Details are still thin on the ground at the moment, but we’re guessing that these will similarly be limited to a run of 5 swapped part figures. Stay tuned for more info (plus details on the MASSIVE Rampage x Disarticulator booth) as soon as we get it!
Joining the Rampage Toys mash-ups teased here a couple of weeks back, The Tarantulas have just revealed that they will also be unleashing another 2 Nibbler micro runs at ToyCon UK next month! Whilst details still remain scarce, it would appear that the pair are due to come in colours inspired by 2 of Kenner’s vintage Star Wars figures- Boba Fett in a light grey soft vinyl, and the slightly more obscure Power Droid in black. Final paint applications, edition sizes and prices are all still to be confirmed, so be sure to keep a lookout on the Tarantulas IG feed here for more information over the coming weeks…
Big thanks to Richard Page at UME Toys for indentifying the black tupperware box on legs for us!
The Tarantulas have just revealed that they will be teaming up with Rampage Toys for a run of custom Nibbler mash-ups! Whilst information is still pretty scarce at the moment, it would appear that both parties have been working on a number of one-off figures that utilise parts from the RealxHead Nibbler as well as a whole bunch of Rampage produced toys (and maybe a few third party!), including the Gachapon Goblins, Cyclops Dinos, and of course, the Ugly Unicorn. Due to debut exclusively at ToyCon UK in April, be sure to stay tuned for a look at the full, painted line up as we get closer to the event…
Teased here earlier in the week, The Tarantulas have just unveiled their New Years Eve Nibbler release in full! Featuring an all-new painted micro run courtesy of Jon Malmstedt over at Rampage Toys, the “Teleport Fade” edition was inspired by a technique brought to NYCC ’10 by Real x Head’s Mori-san, coming cast in a crystal clear soft vinyl, with just half the body painted in the original Nibbler colours to produce this amazing effect… Dropping in the Fishtank Castle store alongside an unpainted clear Nibbler edition and a digital 1983.5 edition of the Fishtank Castle annual this New Years Eve, as usual, an exact release time won’t be confirmed until on the day- although we’re promised it won’t be near midnight in either the UK or the US! Keep track of the dedicated blog here for more info…
Giving us all a great excuse to stay in this New Years Eve, The Tarantulas have just revealed that the date will be playing host to the latest Nibbler release! Teased here in a clear cast soft vinyl, we’re certain that the drop will also feature a painted run in some form or another- we guess only time will tell! Interested parties can keep track of all the latest developments by giving the Tarantulas Instagram feed a follow right here…
We’ve been following the progress of Triclops‘ ‘Venice B.A.S.T.A.R.D Beach‘ release for the past month or so now, and with the reveal of the pictured BeefCake (aka Protein Bar-t aka Muscle Wayne!) this week, we’re guessing we won’t have too much longer to wait! To be joined by the previously posted ‘Final Boss’ from Ralph Niese x The Tarantulas, the thongtastic figure has been kit-bashed from what looks like a variety of MIMP Wrestlers, coming with huge doubled-up fists and a hilarious knuckle six-pack! We’ll be keeping a close eye out for firm release details over the coming weeks, but in the meantime we suggest staying locked on the Triclops IG feed here for the first test shots soon…
Following the WIP sculpt we unofficially leaked a couple of weeks back (check it out here, we’re not posting it again!), the guys over at Triclops have finally revealed how the incredible figure will be released… as they proudly present the ‘Venice B.A.S.T.A.R.D Beach’ Twin Pack! Sculpted by the supremely talented Ralph Niese based on a design by The Tarantulas (which, funnily enough can be found on the front of the recently released Nibblers Annual- it’s the big pink one!), the M.U.S.C.L.E scaled figure is due to come cast in a resin 2 pack, with another thong-tastic figure from the Triclops boys to be revealed soon. Release details are still thin on the ground at the moment, but you can be sure that as soon as we hear anything, you guys will be the first to know…
Just a quick reminder that the highly anticipated NIBBLERS Project from The Tarantulas x Fig-Lab will FINALLY be touching down in the Fish Tank Castle store this evening! Featuring a tripple-A selection of one-off NIBBLER customs from some of contemporary kaiju’s finest, the Real x Head produced soft vinyl figures will also be joined by a special painted run of ‘GO NIBBLERS’ from Rampage Toys’ Jon Malmstedt (pictured). All but one* of the pieces will be sold at fixed price in US$ (prices TBC) at midnight (GMT) tonight (30th November), with all proceeds (bar shipping) going towards new charity organisation ‘APRICOT‘ (find out more about their work with earthquake and tsunami victims here). Head over to The Tarantulas blog here for a full reveal of the 10 pieces on offer…
*Atom A Amaresura’s figure will be auctioned on Yahoo Japan starting 9am JST 1/12 ending 9am JST 2/12. Link will be posted on http://the-tarantulas.blogspot.co.uk/ on the night.
After months of delays and set backs, The Tarantulas’ long awaited NIBBLERS Custom Project will finally be upon us! Featuring 10 one-off custom NIBBLER sofubis from some of the Japanese vinyl scene’s finest including Real x Head, Uamou, BLObPUS, Frenzy Bros, Paul Kaiju, NERD ONE, Atom A and Skull Toys, the Fig-Lab produced figures will be touching down on The Tarantulas store on Friday, November 30th… No news as to pricing or an exact drop time, but The Tarantulas have stated that proceeds will be donated to help children and families evacuated in Japan after March 11th 2011. Stay tuned for more reveals and release info, including details of the final 2 artists over the next few days…
It appears that The Tarantulas and Fig-Lab‘s long awaited collaboration is finally seeing the light of day, with the final reveal of the Cybblers over at the Chipfork Afro Comb blog yesterday. Pictured here in two different colourways (we’re guessing the black edition is the rarer of the two), the latest additions to the Nibbler family feature a similar body to last year’s Dalek inspired Future design, whilst coming with an all-new cyber-styled head. Due to make their debut at Wonder Festival Summer 2012 at the end of this month (July 29th), we’re keeping our fingers and toes crossed that they make an appearance on the newly refurbished Tarantulas store soon…
Joining the teaser we posted a couple of weeks back (pictured bottom right), The Tarantulas has revealed another two images from their forthcoming Nibblers collaboration with Fig-Lab. Unfortunately, we still have no hard details on the project, but from what we can glean from the photo’s tags, this is likely to be some sort of “artist series”, either featuring a selection of one-off customs or limited runs… With a penciled drop date of sometime in July, expect more news on this intriguing release soon.
Following the reveal of the upcoming Fig-Lab x The Tarantulas NIBBLERS release (find out more here), The Tarantulas released the above tentative image over the weekend. Featuring the eye indent similar to the standard Nibbler sofubi, the figure appears to be coming in an unorthodox (for The Tarantulas) mix of neon blue/pink sprays and glitter! Further news on the release is likely to be kept to a minimum on the lead up to the July slated drop, but you can be sure if anything else is let slip we’ll be on it right away…
Fresh from the release ‘The Space Pirate of Fishtank Castle’ last month, The Tarantulas have cleared the Fishtank Castle store in preparation for a very special project next month. All we can garner so far from the new shop banner is that the new release will be featuring The Tarantula’s signature Nibbler character in a collaboration with Fig-Lab… could we possibly be seeing the long awited release of The Tarantulas x Datadub Cybbler (pictured below)? Only time will tell! Expect more news as soon as it hits…
Creators of the Nibbler, one of the art toy community’s most highly desired figures, The Tarantulas are about to celebrate their fifth year in the scene. Working with the likes of Onell Design, Real x Head, Triclops Studio and more recently A Little Stranger, The Tarantulas’ ever elusive Nibbler has taken on a number of weird and wonderful incarnations since its conception as a Glyos head way back in 2008. With February’s GID Nibbler, an upcoming Datadub collaboration, resin drops and more planned for the coming months, The Tarantulas show little signs of letting up…
After several months of trying, we’ve finally managed to prise the ever busy Tarantulas away from the studio long enough to talk about inspirations, experience in the toy industry, and of course, the future for Nibbler…
What got you into the art toy scene, and toys in general? Your Nibblers and Fishtank Castle playsets pay a loving homage to the world of He Man and MOTU, but what other toys were important to your childhood?
I got into toy design straight out of college in the mid 90s – started off doing cereal pack toys then luckily got into Hasbro in late 95.. The whole idea of ‘art toys’ was pretty new – I remember Michael Lau’s original Gardener series & Medicom stuff like Kubrick inspired a change in what we were trying to push as designers – but it was a hard sell at that time. Then the pioneers of resin opened things up - I remember getting a Sucklord 77 at Kid Robot in New York back when they were showcasing interesting obscure stuff as well as pushing their own brand - then meeting Matt Doughty in 2008 which was the catalyst to create the Nibbler. Matt basically said – make a head for Glyos & a few weeks later I sent him a Nibbler cast.
[2008 The Tarantulas x Onell Nibbler]
I actually never had any He-Man toys – I’m 40 so it was all about Star Wars figures for me.. I loved the He-Man cartoon but all those TV toy brands I missed out including Transformers.. I’m into sci-fi & fantasy in equal measures tho – I’m trying to combine the two with the Nibbler stuff.. Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica & other sci-fi around the time like The Black Hole & even Silent Running I remember seeing on TV as a kid – then you had everything that came in the wake of D&D like Citadel Miniatures & the Fighting Fantasy gamebooks we had in the UK which really got me into fantasy stuff. Before Star Wars I remember being massively into die-cast cars – we used to customize them by throwing them up in the air & letting them smash onto the road to bash them up. We even heated up pins with a match to push through the windscreen to make little bullet holes !!
[A Little Stranger Real x Nibbler promo, Feb 2012]
What artists have inspired your work? Are there any particular people/collectives that you’re following at the moment?
Everyone I’ve met through Matt & Don – the whole Global Figure Symposium at SDCC – such an honour to be in that kind of company. Matt has been a huge inspiration - partly down to how much of a total dude he is & partly the work he does – he’s making the best action figure line in the world at the moment without question. He’s forging his own path & those are the people that make the really special stuff – Mori-san & Paul Kaiju are the same in that respect. There’s so much stuff out there I love it when something leaps out - like Lamour Supreme’s Simon head in 2008 – things that make you jump out of your skin because they’re so amazing & open new ways to think about stuff.
[Mecha Nibbler/Fish Tank Castle promo, 2011]
You’ve gained a huge amount of respect for your work in kaiju/resin (various Nibbler lines) and commercial action figures (1/6 scale Teen Wolf ), but how do the process’ in creating each style differ? Obviously having complete creative control over the Nibbler project is a plus, but does it make any of the decisions any less stressful?
I worked in 1/6 for years so I certainly know a lot more about making a 1/6 figure than I do about making soft vinyl figures – all credit to Mori for making the Real x Nibbler – he is a total master. Process wise I’m an old school toy designer – I come up with ideas & sketch them up. For the resin stuff I do my own sculpting but I leave mold & cast to the experts. Doing my own stuff isn’t really stressful – as you say I’m not accountable to anyone – but it’s always getting tougher to find the time…
[Selection of Real x Nibblers, Future Nibblers and Winter Nibblers, 2011]
What can we expect from The Tarantulas in the future? Are there any more Nibblers in the pipeline, and are there any plans for more collaborations?
I’m trying to get a couple of collaborative projects together at the moment - everything stalled for a while because we just moved into a new place which needed quite a bit of work – it’s taken forever so it’s really nice to start getting back into it. It’s roughly 5 years since I started The Tarantulas – so there’ll be a Real x Nibbler release to mark this in April. Going to put out some more resin soon too – the Cy’bbler collab with Datadub & maybe a final run of Future Nibblers.. I’ve got two new figures designed ready to sculpt so hopefully at least one of them will make an appearance later in the year…
[Cy'bbler The Tarantulas x Datadub, 2012]
Any final words?
We’d like to give a massive thanks to The Tarantulas for taking part in the interview (well worth the wait!). Be sure to stay tuned in the coming weeks for more details on the 5th anniversary Nibbler and that Cy’bbler Datadub collab…

New Releases from Papagrim Toys

First off, Wednesday saw the release of Steve’s third iteration of the Snot Beast resin figure. Available in five different colours (with only Black Rub and You Struck Oil still available), the 3″ toys are available to purchase through the Papagrim store for $15 each.
Also up on the store (sadly not pictured) is a freshly sprayed Podaigon figure. Long since sold out, the 5″ tall resin figure has been sprayed with an expert orange and purple scheme, and is still available to purchase over on the store for $65 plus shipping.
The big news for Papagrim this week though was Friday’s announcement of the Human Slayers, a collaboration with artist Michael Skattum. Available now to pre-order, the hand painted green resin character is set to come with 3 points of articulation, including a removable head with a “surprise inside!”. Head over to the Papagrim site for more information…

A Little Stranger explains-

Each GID Nibbler comes with a hot pink hood and specially designed header cards. Vinyl Made in Japan by Real x Head. Cloak Made in UK by A Little Stranger.
Spike Wad figure from Jeff Lamm
Whilst this week’s London Toy Fair was sadly lacking on the art toy front, we did manage to find a glimmer of redemption in the form of Jeff Lamm’s latest vinyl toy release, the four armed Spike Wad. Produced by Unbox, Spike Wad comes with detachable limbs (which can be interchanged with the previous ‘M5 BRAVO’ & ‘STEE-GAR’ figures. Pricing and edition size is still to be confirmed, but watch this space for further details.
Spike Wad is a fairly new large mutant spider. It’s origins are unknown, some say it first appeared in the area of the Large Hadron Collider on the border of France and Switzerland. It was given the military nomenclature “Spider Quad” which was shortened to “Spi-Quad” and finally “Spike Wad”
